“…this is my story…”

Like many people, I grew up with little to no knowledge about personal finance or how to win with money. By the time I hit my early 20s as a college student, that lack of knowledge showed up big time—debt, no savings, no budget, and no financial plan. From briefly being on public assistance to juggling three jobs just to cover rent and textbooks, I took the concept of a “broke college student” to the extreme.

My First Big Financial Mistake

Everything changed in 2001 when I unexpectedly received a lump sum of money—well into six figures. But with no financial foundation or guidance, I did what many would expect: I spent it all. Not on investments or savings, but on things and people that didn’t bring lasting value. Within a few years, what should have been a blessing became a missed opportunity. I was back to living paycheck to paycheck and deeper in debt than ever.

Spiritual & Financial Awakening

Life returned to “normal,” until a close family member experienced a severe mental and emotional crisis. With limited resources, we were forced to rely on public aid and substandard medical care. That’s when it hit me—I had once been in a position to help but had squandered what God had entrusted to me.

That moment became a turning point. I committed to becoming a better steward of what God provides. I immersed myself in learning everything I could about personal finance. I read books, sought out mentors, and worked in the financial services industry in multiple roles.

It was during this time that I discovered faith-based financial ministries and began volunteering and teaching. I was amazed to learn how much the Bible says about money, stewardship, and wise living. I realized that many people struggling with finances might never know that the path to both spiritual and financial freedom is deeply rooted in God’s Word.

Why I Started Free to Serve

With God’s help, I paid off over $40,000 in debt, built up savings, started investing, and launched two businesses. But more importantly, God began working on my heart. In 2008, He gave me the vision to create a ministry that combines faith and finance—one that helps people discover not just how to manage money, but why.

In 2010, Free to Serve was born—a nonprofit committed to equipping people to be wise stewards of their finances while helping them pursue their God-given purpose.

My journey is still unfolding. I’m still learning, still growing, and still passionate about helping others do the same. No matter where you are in your financial story, I invite you to walk this journey with me. Financial freedom isn’t easy—but with faith, purpose, and wisdom, it’s absolutely worth it.

“…Financial Freedom Gods Way…”

Key Scripture:

“So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”  (John 8:36)

Philosophy:

In order to change how we handle money we must change our behavior. In order to change our behavior we must change our hearts. In order to change our hearts we must submit to a force greater than ourselves (Jesus Christ). I believe the road to financial freedom can be summed up in three steps.

“Find Your Purpose – Transform Your Finances – Live For God”

Find Your Purpose:
Why are you here? What were you created to do?  I have discovered that when a person knows their individual God given purpose they are more motivated to accomplish goals, have more clarity, and are better equipped to remove distractions from their life. Understanding your purpose and knowing who you are in God’s eyes is the key to changing your attitudes and behavior regarding money.
Transform Your Finances:
We transform our finances by redefining (for ourselves) what financial success looks like. We focus on eliminating debt, living within our means, learning to create wealth with our talents and giving generously. Once you understand your purpose, you must align your thoughts, giving, spending and even how you earn money so that it’s a reflection of God’s vision for your life.
Live for God:
As stewards we have been entrusted with management over God’s resources. Once you have discovered your purpose and transformed your finances the next step is to align God’s resources with His plan for your life and the lives of others. It is by doing this that we truly live for God.

What to Expect From Me:

I believe in a different version of financial freedom. For me financial freedom starts with learning stewardship. Contrary to what you may have heard stewardship is more than just how much you give. It’s how you give, earn, spend, and save. In short, it’s how you live!  I know attaining financial freedom isn’t easy, but you if let me, I promise to walk with you every step of the way.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoy your journey and I look forward to helping you become Free to Serve.
